Technical Apprenticeships - Applications now open!

A unique opportunity to launch your career in technical theatre. ATG Entertainment’s Technical Apprenticeships put you right at the centre of the action from day one, working backstage in some of the UK’s most iconic and exciting theatres.

You’ll be hands‑on immediately, rigging lights and sound, flying scenery, prepping stages, and supporting a constant flow of touring productions. Our venues never stand still, and neither will you. Every week brings new productions or events, new challenges, and new skills to master.

Across the two‑year programme, you’ll train in lighting, flys, and stage; you will work in at least three different theatres; attend specialist training courses; and build connections with industry professionals. By the end, you’ll be a confident, multi‑skilled technician ready to step into a career across the creative industries.

Applications open in spring, interviews take place in summer, and the apprenticeship begins in September. If you’re looking for a creative, hands‑on, high‑energy career path, this is your moment to apply.

Training & Qualifications

The apprenticeship standard we offer is the Creative Industries Production Technician Level 3. You can find out more about what you’re expected to learn and how it is assessed on the Creative Alliance website.

Approximately 20% of your time is spent on ‘off the job’ training like training courses, shadowing and taught sessions from our partner college, with the remaining 80% of your time spent working as a trainee technician on real events. Training courses are offered by ATG Entertainment and other specialist organisations: everything from PAT testing to working at height and risk assessment to operating lighting desks.

You’ll be assessed and supported by colleagues at ATG Entertainment and an assessor from the National College for Creative & Cultural Industries, which is our partner college. At the end of your apprenticeship your final assessment will be taken with another organisation.

Apprentices are also required to hold Level 2 qualifications in English, Maths and ICT; these are compulsory and will be completed with the college during your apprenticeship if you do not already hold them.

What kind of careers does this apprenticeship lead to?

Our apprenticeship programme has been running since 2013, and nearly 40 apprentices have completed it so far. Around 75% have gone on to work for ATG in a wide range of roles, with others moving into different companies and sectors across the creative industries.

Former apprentices have stepped into roles such as:
• Full‑Time Multi‑Skilled Technician at the Ambassadors Theatre, Woking
• Senior Technician at ATG’s New Wimbledon Theatre
• Casual Theatre Technician across multiple venues
• Part‑Time Safety Officer
• Roles with ATG Productions in the West End

And that’s just the start. We currently have former apprentices working as Heads of Stage and LX Departments, Deputy Technical Managers, and even assisting Olivier Award‑winning Lighting Designers.

This apprenticeship opens real doors, whether you want to build a long‑term career with ATG or take your skills into the wider world of theatre and live entertainment.
